Nancy Hatch Dupree received Medal from the British Ambassador in Afghanistan (30 January 2014)

On Thursday the 30th of January the British Ambassador, Sir Richard Stagg, presented the Sir Percy Sykes Memorial Medal to Nancy Hatch Dupree in recognition of her contribution to education and research in Afghanistan. in particular the establishment of the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University (ACKU).

The Sir Percy Sykes Memorial Medal was bestowed on Nancy by the Royal Society of Asian Affairs, a prestigious London-based society established in 1901 that promotes greater knowledge and understanding of Central Asia and surrounding countries.  It has published an academic journal since 1914 in which an article by Nancy on the little reported role of the Sikhs during the First Anglo-Afghan War created a flurry of lively correspondence.  Sir Percy Sykes (1867-1945) was a scholar, writer, soldier and diplomat in Persia, Chinese Turkestan and other parts of Central Asia.  His two-volume History of Afghanistan is a classic and available at ACKU.

The gala reception at the residence of the British Ambassador was attended by many supportive friends, old and new, without whom Nancy could not have accomplished a thing.
