What is ABLE?
ABLE stands for ACKU Box Library Extension. A long name perhaps, but a very simple idea. A time tested idea. An essential step towards progress. That is the need to read. Because to read is power.
How does it work?
ABLE has two main activities:
Number one – Box Libraries Box libraries are wooden shelves equipped with lots of books that are periodically updated with new books. These mobile libraries are placed inside schools, mosques and communities center around the country. In fact, ABLE has established these libraries in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan.
Number two – Publications ABLE publishes books to help people read. These books are often written by Afghan authors with inspiring content. The program is especially geared toward helping reading-age children. The goal is to supplement school curriculum with material that teaches children about fundamental human values. Through these books, children will get to read stories that leave positive impressions on their minds. They will come across inspiring stories that they can grow up with.
What can you do?
You can spend four dollars to buy a book from ABLE. The four dollars will go to help ABLE continue publishing story books and distributing them to children in Afghanistan. If you have reading age children and you want them to be able to read in Farsi and Pashto, then you can give ABLE books to your children as well.
If you think this is a good idea, then help us. Help ABLE to teach our children to read.
