Dr. Thomas J. Barfield, Professor of Anthropology, Boston University and President, American Institute of Afghanistan Studies

Dr. Barfield, the leading Western scholar of Afghanistan, will deliver a lecture at ACKU on “The Question of State Legitimacy in Afghanistan” on August 5, 2019 at ACKU Auditorium. Author of Afghanistan: A Cultural and Political History (2010) and numerous other landmark works, Dr Barfield began his scholarly engagement with Afghanistan more than 4 decades ago, when he conducted an ethnographic study in the northern part of the country. His scholarship is widely read in academic and policy making circles in the United States and around the world. His remarks will explore the nature of legitimacy in the context of Afghanistan’s state-society relations from a historical perspective with lessons for the current political moment.
